THU., JULY 25 — The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences recognized FRONTLINE, PBS’ award-winning investigative documentary series produced at GBH in Boston, with 17 News & Documentary Emmy Award nominations.

The recognized documentaries investigate key issues in the U.S. and around the world. They examine the critical moments leading up to the war in Gaza and the pivotal role of  Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the inside story of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and his wife Ginni’s path to power, the chaotic response to the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, and the community’s efforts to heal from the trauma, and more.

FRONTLINE’s 17 nods include four nominations for programming covering the Uvalde school shooting. This includes two nominations for After Uvalde: Guns, Grief & Texas Politics, FRONTLINE’s May 2023 documentary collaboration with Futuro Investigates and The Texas Tribune, and two for Inside the Uvalde Response, FRONTLINE’s December 2023 film in partnership with The Texas Tribune and ProPublica.

Global Spyware Scandal: Exposing Pegasus, FRONTLINE’s two-part series in partnership with Forbidden Films and the Pegasus Project consortium, was nominated for two Documentary Emmys. The January 2023 series examined how the powerful spyware Pegasus — sold to governments around the world by the Israeli company NSO Group — was used on journalists, activists, the wife and fiancée of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and others.

Failure at the Fence, FRONTLINE’s December 2023 documentary in partnership with The Washington Post, was nominated for two News Emmys. This groundbreaking visual investigation featured a detailed examination of how Hamas was able to breach Israel’s vaunted security barrier on Oct. 7, 2023 and carry out its deadly attack.

FRONTLINE and The Washington Post also received two nominations for their December 2023 film The Discord Leaks. The film examines how a young Air National Guardsman leaked classified documents on the Discord chat platform and why he wasn’t stopped.

The PBS documentary series also earned a nomination in the prestigious “Best Documentary” category for its two-hour October 2023 investigation, Elon Musk’s Twitter Takeover.

“These nominations reflect our filmmakers’ unflinching pursuit of truth, as well as the power of investigative and accountability journalism,” says FRONTLINE editor-in-chief and executive producer Raney Aronson-Rath. “We are honored to see these documentaries be recognized by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and share this great news with our editorial partners and film teams; with GBH, PBS and CPB; and of course, with our viewers, who support FRONTLINE’s journalism year after year.”
