Philip Bennett

Special Projects Editor

Philip Bennett is the Special Projects Editor at FRONTLINE. He has spent more than 30 years as a foreign correspondent, newspaper editor and television journalist.

Since 2016 he has co-produced a dozen FRONTLINE films, including Divided States of America (2017), the Emmy award-winning The Choice 2016 and America’s Great Divide: From Obama to Trump (2020). As Special Projects Editor he launched FRONTLINE’s Transparency Project and works on investigative projects with newsrooms around the country as part of the FRONTLINE Local Journalism Initiative.

Bennett was the managing editor of FRONTLINE between 2011-13, helping to oversee the series’ journalism. Before working in documentary film, he was managing editor of The Washington Post for four years, a period in which the newspaper won 10 Pulitzer Prizes. As the Post’s foreign editor after the attacks of September 11, 2001, he directed the paper’s global coverage including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Bennett’s journalism career started in 1982 at The Lima Times in Peru. He was a foreign correspondent in Latin America, covering Mexico and Central America during the 1980s. His work has appeared in many publications, including Vanity Fair, the Atlantic and El Pais in Spain.

For 11 years he was a professor of journalism and public policy at Duke University. He holds a degree in history from Harvard College.
