Walls that we've known for so long it's night three of the Democratic National Convention [Music] welcome to PBS news special coverage of the third night of the Democratic National Convention here in Chicago I'm Jeff Bennett and I'm Amna Nas well the theme tonight Echoes what has become Central to the Harris walls campaign in the last few weeks fight for our freedoms Democrats will hear from some of the biggest names in the party including former President Bill Clinton and speaker amera Nancy Pelosi they'll make the case for Harris and draw sharp contrasts with her opponent Donald Trump but the headliner tonight Tim Walls who will formally accept his party's nomination for vice president and he'll be the biggest he'll be on the biggest stage of his political career yeah watching it all with us again tonight is Amy Walter of the cook political Report with Amy Walter David Brooks of the New York Times and Jonathan k part of the Washington Post but first let's head down to the convention floor that's where we find our White House correspondent Laura Baron Lopez she's been covering the Harris walls campaign so Laura we're going to be hearing about Tim Walls from Tim Walls tonight what are you hearing from the delegates and voters about what they want to hear from Tim Walls well they're really excited to hear from Governor walls tonight omna and they want to hear more about just who he is and him to tell his personal story uh because as as many of you know he is not well known to the vast majority of the American public outside of the democratic faithful in this Arena but if I could Omni I do just want to highlight what just occurred on the convention floor which was that we heard from John and Rachel Goldberg polus American Israelis whose son is being held hostage in Gaza right now and the audience was captivated the people here uh many of them were brought to tears listening to the them tell the story of their son hirs who's being held hostage and they said that it's not a political issue but a humanitarian issue and the families of those eight American hostages being held in Gaza meet regularly in Washington and they've also met with President Biden and vice president Harris Laura Baron Lopez thank you let's bring it up back here to our our panel you know most Americans we political obsessives know a lot about Tim Walls but most Americans do not that's a real opportunity that he gets to introduce himself to the American public on his own terms yeah and I think a lot of the folks even in the Auditorium don't know Tim Walls all that well you know he was a member of Congress uh for a few terms from the southern more rural part of the state he's been Governor now uh he's in his second term but this is not a familiar name even to people who are very plugged in Politico so he's introducing himself to a broad range of Voters and that's what I think is will be very interesting these next two nights I think last night was Cath verus for many people in this room actually the last two days Hillary Clinton who heard the the Applause for her the intense uh sort of rallying behind somebody who they feel was wronged in the 2016 campaign um and was supposed to be the first woman who was for many people in this room thought she was going to be the first woman president so that sort of catharsis of having her being able to come back be Center stage and claim that last night with the Obamas really going after and especially Michelle Obama going after Donald Trump in a very personal direct way I think again for this room felt very good and that's why I keep coming back to cathartic but for people who are tuning in who are not blue jersey wearers this is the Tonight is their first opportunity to hear what do the one of the the principles think about going forward that's beyond what people thought about the 2016 election what people thought about Donald Trump and all that he has done uh to wrong uh the the many of the folks in this room and what is it for just your person who is tuning in maybe to learn more about what are these folks going to do for me why should I take what but they're saying seriously what is it that they're going to do to help my life get better Bill Clinton is very good at doing that he will be one of the other main speakers tonight but I think that's what I'm really looking for from walls is to connect Beyond this room and into the homes and of people who are trying to really understand what this ticket has to offer for them personally Jonathan pick up on that point Amy raises is the key one because this is now beginning to sort of look forward to what this governing partnership could look like people are going to get to know Tim Walls a little bit better tonight but among the questions people have about him even those who followed his career is how would his governing style differ from his time in the house or as Governor he was known as a very moderate leader in the house he was representing a very rural District in uh Minnesota and in uh his governorship was known as a much more Progressive leader the question is how would he be as a governing partner to a potential president Harris what would you say about that well the first thing I would say is we won't know any of the answers to your question until we hear from the Presidential nominee because it is the role and the job of the vice president to support the president so I'm not expecting him to lay out any sort of policy ideas that will get ahead of ahead of the the Presidential nominee what I expect him to do tomorrow is to in essence say what he said at the Philadelphia rally where he was you know introduced as um vice president Harris's running mate um that was one particular audience this is a bigger stage this is a another opportunity for him to tell a lot of the stories that he told in Philadelphia maybe you know elaborate elaborate a little more maybe give a hint to what we might hear from vice president Harris when she accepts the nomination tomorrow but in terms of your overall question you will his style be different from in the house than as as Governor we don't know he has he has no governing philosophy now think I mean am I wrong I mean it's all going to be driven it's going to be driven by if she's elected if they're elected by President Harris which is why to David's point we don't know what vice president Harris's policy positions are on a whole host of things because well she hasn't need hasn't needed have one because she's been in support of Joe Biden we spoke with um South Carolina Congressman James kurn on the broadcast earlier to that very question he said right now it's enough for her to be Breed by the energy and the momentum uh driven by the Democratic base but at some point she owes the American people some specifics we will see what at what point that that we see that pivot David how might Tim Walls make the best use of his time tonight on the convention stage and introducing himself to the American people and and really the finding and explaining what inspires and informs his his public leadership yeah I would say they need to move Beyond team blue um you know they've done a great job of making this party very excited and making it very cohesive like they have done that chapter but they have to understand that they're still in my view either tied or even slightly behind I looked this up Amy can correct me if I got it wrong but in two in the last election the polls undercounted the Trump vote by 3.3 percentage points and the in 2016 they under counted by 2 point something and so if that phenomenon of undercounting trump happens again then the slight margin the the kamla Harris right now is gone so they really need to be aggressive about still expanding and so we have Bill Clinton here we had Barack Obama here and they were Democrats who understood how to expand and a couple nights ago am mentioned some of the things that Bill Clinton was for that you couldn't be for in today's Democratic party the crime Bill the welfare reform even the sister Soldier moment which is when he went after a hip-hop artist I don't expect and I would not hope that anybody would ever do that again but but they do have to do something to say we're not just Orthodox Democrats and I don't think walls can do that uh on policy and subsid of grounds but he can do it on cultural grounds and on just personality grounds a lot like I thought you know the first Doug imhoff's speech was so good because it was just personal it was like oh I like that couple I like those people that sometimes is super important in life like we want to hire people we like uh and so if he can convey that kind of atmospherics a sort of a personality and a cultural style that doesn't seem like he came out of San Francisco which he in fact did not then uh he's ahead of the game we know among the folks this ticket is trying to message to are a disaffected Republican voters as well and Independence we've seen several of them featured on the stage I want to go down to the convention floor if we have her up I believe Laura Baron Lopez has a guest who can speak to that Laura take it away thanks so much omna I have here with me former congressman from Illinois Joe Walsh a lifelong Republican Congressman Walsh thanks for talking to us what does KLA Harris need to say at this convention to reach lifelong Republicans like yourself who may be disenchanted with their party she needs to say that Donald Trump is an existential threat to our democracy and she needs to tell us who she is um what she believes in so many people really don't know her look I'm all in we're all in with Republicans for Harris I I think we all want a better sense of her vision for the future and we're expected to hear tonight from uh former lieutenant governor of Georgia Jeff Duncan a lifelong Republican himself do you think that voters who are centrists and Republicans will be impacted by hearing from voices like that absolutely I talk to Trump supporters and Republicans every day they don't like Trump but they're worried about Harris so when they can see people like me and and and Duncan and kin and others come out it helps to encourage them give them the courage to come out and support kamla what exactly policy wise do you think she needs to Define herself on more you know there's you know Trump and and is trying to paint her as some crazy leftist she's not and so I think just I don't want we don't want a 10-point plan we just want her vision for America we've already got a sense of it she's inclusive she wants everybody with her unlike Donald Trump who's trying to scare people into voting for him great thank you former congressman omna and Jeff you heard uh that some Republicans like uh former Congressman Joe Walsh do want to hear a little bit more specifics from Harris when it comes to some of the policy Amy when it was President Biden who was a top to ticket there was that uh that name double haters people who didn't like either candidate how is that shaken out now that it's kamla Harris who was the Democratic nominee yeah you know what we should have called double haters are people who don't like Donald Trump and many people who were fine with Biden but were not excited that he was the uh the nominee so when he left the race and Harris came in those double haters the ones who I called the me on on Biden they went over to Harris so the double hater cont contingency has shrunk a great deal with Harris on top of the ticket now there still are people who say they dislike both candidates and whether those voters end up voting right if you if you if you dislike both of them the odds are you may say it's not worth it because I don't like either one or you're just waiting and so for some of them it may be I'm going to that's why these events are important I'm going to wait and see and the debates are important I'm going to wait and see if they can speak to the things that make me dislike them equally yeah let's head down to the convention stage because Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy is set to address the convention crowd here he of course became a leading voice on gun control after Sandy Hook here he is I just want to let you [Music] know I want to let you know that everything that you just saw in that video that's exactly what happened I know because I was the Democratic senator who negotiated that bill to secure the border with President Biden and pres vice president Harris I want to tell you this as well Donald Trump's allies weren't just in the room they helped us write the whole bill it was a bipartisan bill it was a tough Bill $20 billion in new border security gave the president the emergency power to shut down the Border made compassionate but serious reforms to our Asylum system one Republicans said it would have had almost unanimous support if it weren't for Donald Trump trump killed that bill and he did it because he knew that if we fixed the Border he' lose his ability to divide us his ability to Fan the Flames of fear about people who come from different places right you guys know this right hate and division that's Trump's oxygen right people people like Trump and JD Vance they need it to survive in politics people are saying that they're weird that they're creepy and they are weird they are creepy but even worse they're weak KLA Harris is not we for 20 years K Harris has been tough as nails when it comes to securing our our border when she was a California prosecutor she went after drug smugglers human traffickers she put 100 gang members away in a single sweep Trump says that a safe Nation can't be an immigrant Nation that's flat wrong and KLA Harris knows it she knows this too engraved on the Statue of Liberty is a poem the last line reads I lift my lamp beside the golden door for Generations that lamp has called people to start a brave New Life in America my ancestors your ancestors and the parents of the next president of the United States of America comma Harris knows that we can be a nation of proud immigrants and and a nation of strong immigration laws that's why when she's president she will bring that border Bill back and K Harris is going to pass it how do I know this because in this race there is only one candidate who has ever been willing to do the worthy redeeming work of making our country better of recognizing that we do not have to choose between celebrating our heritage and enforcing our laws right the Beautiful the beautiful thing about America is that we can be both we can be a nation of immigrants who love their country and a nation with a secure border and there is only one candidate there is only one candidate who can deliver that vision of America and it's KLA Harris thank you very much Democrats please welcome Bear County Sheriff Javier Salazar [Music] on the other side of the border the traffickers they P they pack migrants into 18-wheelers like cattle 50 100 at a time then they seal the doors that's when the 911 calls come we hear them desperate terrified gasping for air now sometimes we get there in time sometimes despite our best efforts we can't When Donald Trump comes down to Texas stands next to officers in uniforms just like mine he's not there to help us don't think that not for a second he is a self-serving man I mean look just like just like when he killed the Border Bill he just made our jobs harder now Kam on the other hand has been fighting border crime for years she's gone down to Mexico and work to stop the traffickers and when the traffickers didn't stop she put them in jail now down in my neck of the woods we call that fooling around and finding out I may be paraphrasing a bit we protect and now the the Border sheriffs that I know right and I we're like kamla we protect and serve we enforce the law we show compassion and we we fight like hell to protect our border because as we all we've always known in Texas when we fight we win please welcome California representative Pete [Music] [Applause] [Music] Aguilar you just heard there from a border Sheriff from Texas that was Javier Salazar speaking on the issue of immigration back here with our panel we should talk more about this issue because we know it's going to be something we hear a lot about tonight and David it is worth noting that this is an issue Republicans have held trust Advantage still hold the advantage even when people look at who they would trust to handle this better Donald Trump still holds an advantage over vice president Harris what do you make of the way that Democrats are messaging on this tonight and we expect to hear more later on yeah I'm glad they're doing it U it's uh the number one issue for Republicans along with the the economy um you know I I think they're absolutely right Donald Trump did blow up that de border deal uh and so that's a perfectly valid argument I guess the counter argument would be where were you for the Last 5 Years and so if you go to 2020 you had a lot of Democrats not Joe Biden but including K harus who wanted to decriminalize border crossing that was a policy wildly out of step with the American mainstream opinion and then the first few years of the Biden Administration they really didn't do much and as we saw the traffic across the border surged and so I I still think Republicans going to have a a um a strong advantage on this the one flicker of doubt I had it's something Amy said yesterday about a poll you had done who do you trust to keep you safer yeah and if that was even if that's even that's bad for the Republicans I mean if we all remember Chris Matthews had this saying that that Republicans are the daddy party and the the Democrats are the mommy party if suddenly the Democrats are at parody with keeping you safe and that presumably in includes border safety then that's that's a very good sign for Democrats if if they really are even on on that kind of existential safety issue and Jonathan it is striking the degree to which Democrats are going on the offensive on this message in particular you know to include this in the convention tonight that was a that was a choice to invite that that border sheriff and have him speak and call out Donald Trump in the way that he did that that was that's a choice yes that is a choice thanks to Donald Trump I mean this issue would be off the table if that border Bill had passed actually if that border Bill had passed and had been signed into law there might be fights here because that's the most conservative immigration Bill to come out of Congress in what two decades or more maybe since since um since Bush HW Bush um the fact that he called up told Republicans do not vote for this and I left at the key piece senator Senor Langford of Oklahoma was the chief negotiator he is one of the most conservative members of the Senate this was the the best deal that Republicans were ever going to get I was hearing from from democratic members of Congress who were saying to me this bill is going to cause huge problems huge problems uh because Democrats had put everything on given away this is the way they were characterizing Chang the way Asylum works on the board right right and so they were worried oh my God this thing's going to pass he's going to sign it and then we're going to set back immigration policy for three decades as one one member of Congress told me and then Donald Trump makes a phone call and saves the Democrats I mean Chuck Schumer I don't know what you think of Chuck Schumer I think Chuck Schumer Senator Schumer is one of the one of the smartest political strategists there is in in Congress I think he knew what he was doing Donald Trump basically did what Senator Schumer probably was hoping he would do because now that the bill is is dead he's given Democrats up and down the ballot an issue to run on and they're running on it we should point out too after the failure of that bill President Biden did step in with executive actions still angered many on the left wing of his party right some harsh restrictions at the border we have seen those Crossings come down dramatically this year in part because of those steps but Amy I'm curious about how voters look at this right now because I recall a time uh in the not so distant in the past when immigration was ranking top for many voters and that meant a lot of things it was an economic issue it was a cultural issue it was a safety issue where does it rank now how are people looking at this around the yeah it's I think that's such an important thing to remember that where the media focus is is also where voters talk about their important issues I mean some of the things like the economy that's always going to be something that's important to them because it's what they deal with dayto day but on other ranking issues if like we were earlier um in the year or in 2023 when the reports you all did a lot of those reports as well of here's what's happening at the border people were seeing those um buses come into their communities obviously cities are still struggling with many um of the migrants who are staying there now but it was a daily story in the news right it is not a daily story anymore and so I think for the peripheral voter this is not the same issue as it was um earlier now for Republican voters it is still a top issue and it is a driving issue in the same way that abortion or Health Care is a driving issue for Democrats and that's why you know I we talked sort of jokingly about the NFL my NFL uh watching behavior and love when you go with sports refence when I go with my sports reference about how I do that and and uh undecided voters but what's going on in the environment matters a lot um and if if what we're talking about come September October is an another increase surge On the Border or if there are things that are happening in some of these cities related directly to the situation then yes that gets back into the spotlight but I think um to David's point it really is what immigration is is an opportunity for the Trump campaign to make Harris look weak he has created and we saw it at the RNC he has created a narrative for this race that is about who is strong and who is weak who's going to protect you and keep you safe and who is not and the Border being the centerpiece of of that argument for him and that it allows permission structure essentially even for people who aren't top concern where their top concern is not immigration but to say h she wasn't really strong there how can I trust that she's going to be strong on these other things she said she was going to be or uh be as experienced or as um uh sort of be able to follow through on those things but for those independent and swing voters who might decide this election what I hear you say is that arguments about the about the immigration about immigration policy and what's happening on the southern border that's not a compelling argument in the way that Donald Trump might think it is it could be I think what the compelling argument is is that um there was a failure by the people in charge to do their job right now whether you think the issue of immigration is your very top concern or not it w what the concern is the only job of an elected official especially the president is to keep you safe and to keep us secure and if they failed on that front what is that going to say about what they do as President we were talking earlier about the Democratic Outreach to disaffected Republicans another uh Republican who worked in the Republican Administration Olivia Troy is speaking now let's listen to what she says who dreamed of working in the white house it was a hard decision but as an American it was the right one I saw how Donald Trump undermined our intelligence Community our military leaders and ultimately our Democratic process now he's doing it again lying and laying the groundwork to undermine this election it's his Mo to se doubt and Division that's what Trump wants because it's the only way he wins and that's what our foreign adversaries want because it's the only way they win as a national security expert [Applause] Latina imig me [Applause] being inside Trump's White House was terrifying but what keeps me up at night is what'll happen if he gets back there the guard rails are gone the few adults in the room the first time resigned or were fired I grew up in the kind of working family that Trump tends to care about conservative Catholic Texan July 4th was our most sacred holiday those values made me a Republican and they're the same values that make me proud to support KLA Harris not because we agree on every issue but because we agree on the most important issue protecting our freedom so to my fellow Republicans you aren't voting for a Democrat you're voting for democracy you aren't betraying our party you're standing up for our country thank you let's go to our Laura Baron Lopez on the convention floor who is with Congressman Aguilar who just addressed the convention here Laura hi Jeff uh yes I have Congressman Pete of California he's a house Democratic caucus chair Congressman thank you so much for joining us I I want to ask you about lettino voters you were talking about immigration that's clearly a big Focus tonight for Democrats uh trying to reclaim the conversation around immigration uh how does kamla Harris reach leoan in particular we know that Donald Trump has been trying to siphon off some votes there especially on this issue of immigration look I think KLA Harris is talking about the right thing she's saying we shouldn't have to choose between securing our border and fulfilling that American dream and that promise that's what resonates with Latinos the Latino Community wants clean air and clean water and a better quality of life for their kids that's the American dream that allowed me to be up on this stage here this evening and kamla Harris speaks to that because of her own personal story but also because of the policies that she Advocates at every turn to open more legal Pathways for immigration to respect immigrants and the work that they do the dignity that they bring to everything that they do that's a message that resonates we also have seen in most recent polling that there has been a swing amongst Latino Latinas uh women who are move who are moving more towards Harris now that she's at the top of the ticket how does she keep that momentum going after this convention well I think uh Latinas freedom is important to them reproductive freedom is incredibly important uh to the Latino Latino Community uh and Latinas um resonate with that and so I think that that's an important piece of what we do I think you'll continue to hear those themes um and I also think that it's important to note that Latinos are more likely to have higher educational uh attainment levels and and Latinas know uh about their communities and so I think that they're responding with the time that we have left is this energy here at the convention that we've seen with kamla Harris's rise is it translating to down ballot races for the house it is we're seeing it in competitive Battleground districts we're seeing volunteers show up grab a clipboard knock on doors make phone calls that's where campaigns are won and that's what we're seeing out in these competitive districts time and time again this is translating a down ballot absolutely Carson pet agular thank you so much and California is going to be a state where there are a number of house districts that are competitive for Democrats Jeff andna all right that's our Laura Baron Lopez down on the convention floor with Congressman Pete agular on stage now is another Republican Jeff as we know that they've been featuring a number of Republicans on the stage tonight this is the former lieutenant governor of Georgia and we're still up here with our panel as well keeping an eye on all of this Jonathan just weigh in here as we watch this reception from a crowd of democrats for a republican speaking on stage well I mean I think Olivia Troy set it up perfectly when she said you know as a lifelong Republican and someone who's still in the party when you make this vote you are not voting to my fellow Republicans you aren't voting for a Democrat you are voting for democracy and it's a very important message I mean that goes over well In This Crowd um but it's an important message for those Republicans disaffected Republicans folks who are bothered by Donald Trump giving them permission it's okay and so you go from a former National Security advisor to the vice president of the United States to the former lieutenant governor of Georgia who was there in the middle of it and who decided to stand put country over party and David it strikes me that Georgia Brian Kemp has a 60% approval rating Donald Trump when he was there not too long ago was attacking Brian Kemp and Brian Kemp's wife and now you have the former lieutenant governor of Georgia here endorsing kamla Harris Georgia is a state that's Donald Trump might need if he's trying to get to 270 electoral votes in this election that's how good Trump is attacking a 60% approval Governor is not the obvious thing to do and so he must have no he doesn't have any strategy he's just riffing uh I I want to get back on this theme of the former Republicans you know I guess that's me you know I worked at the Washington Times editorial page The Wall Street Journal editorial page National Review you if you name a right-wing outlet outlet I work for it uh and I was sort of driven away slowly by new rich and Tom DeLay and quickly by Donald Trump and I have to say Amy mentioned earlier that there are a bunch of former Republicans who were against Trump but me on Biden yeah I was against Trump but high on Biden and I'm a lot more lukewarm about kamla Harris because I don't know if she's the 2019 camel Harris or some other camel Harris and so that's what as a lot of and I have most of my friend group are rep former Republican never trumpers uh the ones who aren't just Pro trumpers uh and I I sense a lot of that I don't know if we're unrepresentative sample I mean people who write for Washington Publications are a little unrepresentative maybe but I I I think Kam haris still has a lot of work to do with frankly people who were sort of Mo moderate conservative on economics uh and are not sure who this person was in the way Joe Biden from Scranton was not a problem well we know one of the messages we're going to hear a lot on tonight is a reminder of what happened on January 6 back in 2021 here's part of a video that's playing right now on stage reminding folks in the room about that day to the capital to the upper level my didn't have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our country and our constitution bring out [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] we can't hold this we to look at this we're trying to hold the upper back we're trying to hold the Upp back now need area for the members they all walking over now the tunnel need to move if we lose any more time we may lose the authority that leave so for to leave we need to do it now lost the line we lost the line all you need come back all you need come back h28 with four members the doors barricade there's people pled the hallways outside we have no way out officers still remaining on the house floor so we can secure the M on the other side copy [Music] [Applause] and if I win I will be looking very very strongly about Pardons and I mean full pardons with an apology to to many an apology they were peaceful people these were great people the crowd was unbelievable and I mentioned the word love the love the love in the air I've never seen anything like it please welcome Mississippi representative Benny Thompson [Music] [Applause] on January 6th like most of my colleagues I had one goal to uphold the votes of the American people the Cornerstone of our American democracy but as what you've just witnessed let me remind you that the members of that violent M had another goal they wanted to stop the peaceful transort of power for the first time in American democracy thank God they failed because in this country we settle our differences at The Ballot Box not through Ballance it took a long time to get here and we're not going back because I remember that dark history it's my own history in this life my father never cast a vote because of Jim Crow so I dedicated my career to protecting the votes against violence and discrimination you can imagine what I felt on January 6th when I saw with my own eyes those insurrectionists trying to take that away they did it to Rob millions of Americans of their votes they did it because Donald Trump couldn't H losing he lied about the election fraud he called his conspiracy Le mob to Washington he would rather subvert democracy then submit to it now he's plotting against again his campaign proclaims that elections won't end until the moment of inauguration we will win or it was rigged we win or else this is downal Trump's America elections are about Choice choose democracy not political violence choose the America we always taught our children to love choose kamla Harris please welcome former United States capitals police sergeant aquilino ganel [Music] thank you thank you thank you before I begin before I begin I need to acknowledge the sacrifices that five officers who died as a result of January 6 May on that day my name is Akino gell I immigrated to the US from the Dominican Republic when I was 12 I became an American citizen I was a sergeant in the US Army and a capital police officer I had seen violence while serving in Iraq but nothing nothing prepared me for January 6 we officer R everything to protect innocent people we were beaten and blinded I was assaulted with a poll attached to the American flag president Trump summon our attackers and sighted with them he betrayed us when I joined the army in capital police I took an oath to defend the Constitution I did so with Duty in my soul and I still feel it to Donald Trump I asked why don't you on January 6 I nearly died protecting the capital and I will do it again for our democracy the way to preserve it is to elect ker Harris our first female commander-in Chief please welcome New Jersey representative Andy [Applause] [Music] Kim we just heard from the former Capitol Police Officer there speaking about the horrors he endured on January 6th for more on what we're hearing here on the convention floor and also more insight into tonight's headline or Governor Tim Walls want to bring in someone who's worked with him very closely that is Minnesota's lieutenant governor Peggy Flanigan lieutenant governor thanks for being here thanks for having me so tell us a little bit more about this man you know so well with whom you have been co-gn as you put it for the last six years it's worth pointing out millions of Americans feel they don't know enough about him to form an opinion about him that includes larger percentages among women in particular communities of color what do you want them to know about Tim Walls well I've been friends with Tim Walls for uh almost 20 years and govern in partnership with him for the last six he is a dad he is a coach he's a teacher he's a veteran and I can tell you as a Native American woman uh he is an incredible partner to women leaders I know that he will uh be an incredible partner for the vice president when she becomes president and I have just watched him lead with courage and with heart and his whole uh lived experience is about public service it was governor walls who settled on that approach of calling Donald Trump weird a way of of diminishing him making him small that critique I think took on added resonance in large part because of where it was coming from a Midwestern Governor an older white man and it speaks to his ability as Democrats see it to speak to different groups of Voters in different ways how do you see um I think he was calling it like it is and I think that's one of the the things that people like about about Governor walls he's authentic um these guys are weird I think it's it's weird that you know Donald Trump and JD Vans want to have power over women's bodies our healthare decisions the books that we can read um and jaapos that with KLA Harris and uh Tim Walls who want to make sure that we can protect our freedom and just live our lives the way that we want to What What In informs and inspires his his approach to Public Service well I think it's it's how he grew up in rural Nebraska his dad was the superintendent of of schools um he also grew up on a farm I think that informs how hard works and just his realness with people but of course 24 years in the Army National Guard he believes in in service and he's continued that work in Congress and then as as Governor but mostly I think it's cuz he's a teacher um he's a good teacher and that also makes him a good listener and a good learner and I think that is absolutely informed the way that he's governed we know we're going to hear a lot about his personal narrative and we've heard vice president Harris referring to him as coach walls out here on the stage with her um tell us a little bit more because I always find this to be revealing in terms of leadership style you two have to have disagreed about something over the last six years correct me if I'm wrong but tell us about what happens when you disagree how does he handle those moments so I'll tell you uh as a motan um we disagree about corn dogs versus prano pups at the State Fair um but the uninformed among what I'm sorry prono pup yeah a prano pup is like a hot dog on a stick okay yep so I'm just educating folks about the Midwest right that's part of my job but here's the deal you know we have different lived experiences that's why we decided to run together and serve together but we have shared values so when we have a conflict we talk about it we work it out um but ultimately he's the governor and gets to decide but I'll tell you this um I have valued serving with him so much I have learned an incredible amount from him and uh I just he really listens and can take on opin that are different from his own lieutenant governor Flanigan thanks again for your time thanks for having me let's head to the convention stage because Stevie Wonder is set to address their cow here I love you I just want to say I love you I love you and every song that I've sang every song that I've written is because of my love for you right here but this year this year I've prayed very hard for peace to come to our world's Nations but also to each one of our hearts even though our hearts have been beaten and broken Beyond prayer I know the important of action and now is the time to understand where we are and what it will take to win win the broken hearts win the disenchanted when the angry Spirits now is the time this is the moment to remember when you tell your children where you were and what you did as we as we stand between history's pain and tomorrow's promises we must choose courage over complains and SE it is time to get up and go boat listen the choice is clear clear than anyone else is saying did you hear me clear than anyone else is saying you feel me we need to choose Joy over anger kindness over recrimination and peace over War every time we must choose to be above the ugly words the hateful anger and the division those words and anger create we must keep on keeping on until we truly are a United people of these United States and then and then we will reach a Higher Ground are live coverage of the Democratic National Convention I'm Jeff Bennett I'm omna Nas coming up we'll have more speeches by former President Bill Clinton governor Tim Walls who's expected to accept the Democratic nomination for vice president right now joining us in the booth is a very special guest Senator Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts senator welcome thanks for being here thank you I'm delighted to be with you and and you have the unque experience of having run for president against Joe Biden and kamla Harris that I lost well but why in your view is she the the right person for the job right now and how do you think she's grown into the role and established herself over the last three and a half years you know it really is the case that kamla has a long history of fighting for families and particularly fighting for women and access to health care overall what's happened in just the last few years has been with the decision in DOS so that half the population has lost a constitutionally guaranteed right KL Harris has moved into the leadership position fighting and made very clear here's the contrast between Democrats and Republicans right now 30% of all women live in a state that effectively bans abortion if Donald Trump and JD Vance make it to the presidency and vice presidency it's not going to be 30% it's going to be 100% KLA Harris is fighting in exactly the opposite direction she believes that that's a decision that women and their doctors should make and she is determined that as president of the United States give her a democratic Congress and R versus Wade will be law of the land again it's the right time right moment the other one is kamla has fought for years years to lower costs for working families and it's a crucial issue for people right now in this moment and she's the one who has the history and has the chops to deliver on that tell us a little bit more about what specific policies and proposals you would like to see from this ticket and and have you been able to speak with them directly to offer any advice or guidance on that so let me just start with the proposals she has already put out yeah how do you feel about that I feel really good about what she's put out so start with price gouging you know we have a problem that prices are just too high for families cost too much inflation is something we've been talking about for a while but the best economic studies I've seen show that about half of the increase in costs come from price gouging corporations that have Market power who have raised their prices extraordinarily eggs remember eggs not too long ago and they just jerked the prices up how does that happen it happens in part because there is a company Cal M that is a huge egg producer doesn't have a lot of competition so it increases its cost its prices and the question is was it just passing along cost no what we know is they increased their profit margins by 78% now look I look at that and I say there's at least a suspicion here price gouging KLA Harris as attorney general when after the price gougers in the California following the California fires um when we were both in the Senate together we served together and put out a proposal to deal with price gouging in the pandemic and now she has said as president it's a direct attack on price increases that are affecting families right now and she says I'm going straight after it is what she's put forward part the is what she's put forward so far enough for you or are there more specifics you'd like to see around the issue of lowering cost for families I'm delighted to see this I also want to say she's also picked up on housing and her housing proposal the part I love the best is she's one of the first people out there instead of just saying let's give people more money and somehow the market is going to correct it we've been saying that for for 25 30 years now she's saying what we have to do is increase the supply and we've got to push more housing built and she's got a plan and a direction to go to build 3 million new housing units in America and that's the sort of thing it brings down Rents It also means first time home buyers have a chance to get in the market it means that there's housing for seniors housing for people with disabilities housing for people starting out housing for people whose families are growing so I like her approach it's about saying I've got good ideas and I believe we can harness the energy and power of government to put it on the side of working fam so I think she's in the right direction I always come back to the question though of how do you pay for it President Biden and Democrats spent trillions of dollars to Green the economy to outcompete to fix infrastructure and crumbling roadways what space is left for a potential Harris Administration to spend billions or trillions more on on on on the kind of policies that she's promoting without without compounding inflationary pressure how does she do that responsibly all those things you talked about I just want to remind everybody were paid for the last big expense that wasn't paid for was the Donald Trump tax cuts for millionaires billionaires and giant corporations that's the one that got a lot of deficit financing out of it but if you're asking the question what's going to happen next year on the tax front it's the right question as we know to keep the numbers low the Republicans actually made a lot of these tax cuts expire so we'd all pretend that they were going to cost less than they otherwise would in fact I think what that means is taxes are front and center no matter what and we're going to have some choices to make so as a nation Donald Trump has already laid out his position and that is cut taxes for billionaires and in fact about $3 and5 million for every billionaire in the country $3 and half million dollars annually project 2025 explains who's going to pay for that and the answer is middle class families in fact project 2025 says the average family of four will pay about $2600 more every year in taxes so they've got one approach to taxes my view on this is we got a lot of space in the expiring Trump tax cuts but also in other areas um for example uh the housing bill that I'm proposing which spends even more to build even more housing focuses on on estate taxes and says you know if we would just go back to the levels in the George W Bush Administration and Stitch up a few of those new loopholes on weirdy trusts we can actually raise about half a trillion dollars that helps pay for a whole lot of Housing and gets a whole lot of firsttime buyers into a home and on a path to build some real wealth Senator the way you light up when get to talk about tax policy I will say we only have I think about a minute or so left but I have to ask you about this before we let you go do you think this country is ready to elect a woman president in a way that many worry the country wasn't back in 2016 so I'm going to say it this way we are not the same Nation we were before 2016 and we actually nominated someone who by the way got more votes than the other guy we are not in the same place that we were in 20 when four different women stood up and held their hands up and at least got in the primary and fought it out we are also not in the place we were before we had a woman serve as vice president so ably and strongly for four years so I see America as having changed I think this is not just KLA Harris's moment I think this is the moment for the United States of America and I'm loving it senator Elizabeth Warren thanks so much for joining us we appreciate your time let's shift our attention back to the convention floor we're Democratic house leader hakeim Jeff privilege as a brooklynite New Yorker and as an American to stand before you today and unequivocally express my support for kamla Harris and Tim Walls to be the next president and vice president of the United States of America over the last few years years house Democrats have been hard at work and we could not have asked for a better leader to partner with than President Joseph robinet Biden who will go down as one of the most consequential presidents of all time last month President Biden selflessly passed the torch to vice president kamla Harris who is ready willing and able to fight for the people KLA Harris is a courageous leader a compassionate leader and a common sense leader who will deliver Real Results for everyday Americans Kamala Harris is fighting for our freedom kamla every single Community now the road ahead will not be easy which brings me to you know who Donald Trump is like an old boyfriend who you broke up with but he just won't go away he has spent the last four years spinning the block trying to get back into a relationship with the American people bro we broke up with you for a reason Trump was The Mastermind of the GOP tax scam where 83% of the benefits went to the wealthiest 1% in America Trump failed our country during the covid-19 pandemic Trump is a Chaos Agent who was focused on himself not the American people Trump tried to destroy our democracy by lying about the election and inciting a violent mob to attack the capital Trump put three extreme justices on the Supreme Court who destroyed Ro v Wade we broke up with you for a reason Donald Trump can spin the block all he wants but there's no reason for us to ever get back together been there done that we're not going back kamla Harris kamla Harris and house Democrats will always put people over politics KLA Harris and house Democrats will lower cost and grow the middle class kamla Harris and house Democrats will fix our broken immigration system and secure the Border kamla French Montana I think we're all the way up can you tell he's a hip-hop fan to scripture in his speech getting a powerful call and response from the crowd here we are still back up here uh with our panel and Laura Bron Lopez is also down on the convention floor she's been taking all this in with the delegates down there Laura give us a sense in particular some of the talking points we've heard again and again from on the stage specifically related to project 2025 how those are going down among delegates there well the delegates are heavily focused on that and on Project 2025 and when Keenan Thompson the comedian was going through the different effects of project 2025 things like saying that uh project 2025 from the heritage Foundation calls for abolishing the education depart department and featuring a civil servant who works in the education department uh that got a strong response from the delegates here and from the audience as well as when Sergeant aalo gonell came up the former capital police uh officer who was physically attacked when he uh worked at the capital on January 6th the delegates were just watching him extremely closely giving him a standing Novation and that shows uh om that KLA Harris's campaign even though they talk a lot about Freedom when they're talking about threats to democracy they use the word Freedom instead of some of the other language that President Biden used that is still going to be a heavy argument that they make when trying to remind voters of what occurred during the Insurrection on January 6th and Laura I mean help us understand the underlying strategy here in sort of trying to paint this narrative Democrats are trying to paint and saying that Donald Trump is dangerous that he's an extremist that's why they're talking about project 20 2025 but also that he's unfit which is why they're trying to bring back this uh his role in in in citing the attacks in January 6th well KL Harris's campaign really believes uh which is something that also President Biden's campaign believed which is that when they remind voters about Donald Trump's uh encouragement of the riers on January 6th him saying uh that the line about the election being rigged that it reminds voters why they didn't want him last time around and uh reminds them of his temperament as well as could very well move over some of those Republican leaning voters that they want to win Lon Lopez let's go back to the convention floor former President Bill Clinton is set to address the convention crowd here [Applause] thank you thank you whoa let me ask you for after the last two days aren't you proud to be a Democrat and I am very grateful to the Republicans and independent that have joined us have been up here on the stage and I hope they feel better about it now because I've seen all these things that even I have to be reminded of from time to time when I get my spirits down I love seeing the Obamas here I love seeing President Biden and I thought Hillary gave a great speech too I love but I I love seeing all these young leaders bunch of them are coming up after me they look better they sound better and they'll be exciting I do want to say one word about President Biden remember he had an improbable turn that made him president and we were in the middle of a pandemic and an economic crash he healed our sick and put the rest of us back to work and he strengthens our our alliances for peace and security he stood up for Ukraine trying desperately to get a ceasefire in the Middle [Music] East and then he did something that's really hard for a politician to do he voluntarily gave up political power and George Washington knew that and he did it and he set the standard for us serving two terms before it was mandatory it helped his legacy and it will enhance Joe Biden's Legacy and you and it's a stark contrast to what goes on in the other party so I want to thank him for his courage compassion his class his service his sacrifice Joe Biden thank [Applause] you he kept the faith and he infected a lot of the wrestling of us now let's cut to the chase I am too old to Gil the Lily two days ago I turned 78 the oldest man in my family for four generations and the only personal vanity I want to assert is I'm still younger than Donald Trump last night last night in what I thought was a very moving series of episodes we nominated Comm Harris and Tim Waltz and just think about that two leaders with All-American but still improbable life stories It could only happen here their careers after all started in community courtrooms and classrooms two leaders who spent a lifetime getting the good job done now one of the things that I've noticed over my increasingly long life that is that a presidential election is unique in several ways first of all it's the greatest job interview for the greatest job in the world secondly the Constitution says we the people get to do the hiring and the third thing is that every four years we get to change the requirements for the job so here's what I'm thinking because I try to apply this in every election will this President take us backward or forward will this President give our kids a brighter future depends will this President bring us together or tear us apart will the president increase the peace security and stability and freedom that we enjoy and extend it to others as we can we the people we have to make a decision about these kind of questions and every four years it's a little different because the people come at the candidates come at the candidates Ates and they say as they're saying now here are our problems solve them here are our opportunities seize them here are our fears ease them here are our dreams help them come true a president can answer that call by saying I'll do my part but you have to help me we have to work together or you can dodge what needs to be done by dividing distracting and diverting us so in 2024 we got a pretty clear choice it seems to me Comm Harris for the people and the other guy who's proved even more than the first go around that he's about me myself and I I know which one I like better for our country country KLA Harris will work to solve our problems seize our opportunities ease our fears and make sure every single America however they vote has a chance to chase their dreams you know when she was young she worked at McDonald's and she greeted every person with that thousand wat smile and said how can I help you now she's at the Pinnacle of power and she's still asking how can I help you I will be I'll be so happy when she actually enters the White House as president because she will break my record as the president who spent the most time at McDonald's now but we got an election to win and remember we've got a guy that's pretty good at what he does Donald Trump has been a paragon of consistency he's still dividing he's still blaming he's still belittling other people he creates chaos and then he sort of curates it as if it were precious art let me say not a single day goes by even though I've been gone for well over 23 years from the White House not a day goes by that I don't thank the Lord for the chance I had to serve and what it meant and one of the reasons thank you wait one of the reasons one of the reasons I love the job so much is that in the toughest times even on the darkest days if you tried hard enough there was always something good you could do for somebody else now some days that's not easy to do you you got to deal with all these emergencies or there's something going on here there yonder but Comm Harris is the only candidate in this race who has the vision the experience the temperament the will and yes the sheer joy to get something done I mean look what does your opponent do with his voice he mostly talks about himself right so the next time you hear him don't count the lies count the eyes count the eyes his vettas his Vengeance his complaints his conspiracies he's like one of those teners opening up before he walks out on stage like I did trying to get his lungs open by saying me me me me me [Applause] me when Cela Harris is President every day we'll begin with you you you [Music] you so we got to ask ourselves the questions if we're going to hire a president Do you want to build a strong economy from the bottom up in the middle out or do you want to spend the next four years talking about crowd [Applause] size you're going to have a hard time believing this but so help me I triple checked it since the end of the Cold War in 1989 America has created about 51 million new jobs I swear I checked this three times even I couldn't believe it what's the score Democrats 50 Republicans won I'm glad that we've got a championship winning coach on our team but even the most limited of us and what we know about football or any other sport knows that if you're got 50 and the other side's got one you're ahead what about affordable housing it's a terrible problem in America now we need more and affordable health care it's why the Democrats put a limit on monthly payments for insulin and a $22,000 a year out of pocket limit and are trying to cover more drugs by bargaining for prices we need more financing for small businesses we need still to strengthen our alliances I almost croaked in the first debate of this election season when President Trump said nobody respected America anymore like they did when he was president wait wait and with a straight [Applause] face look you got to give him he's a good actor with a with a straight face he cited as evidence of the respect that existed for us when he was there the presidents of North Korea and Russia I'd rather have the people who respect us now and one of the things one of the things is when you send a signal to the other countries you want them to know whether they agree with you or not at least that you're on the level that here's where you are and what you believe what are they supposed to make to these endless tributes to the late great Hannibal [Applause] Lector I mean President Obama once gave me the great honor of saying I was the explainer and chief folks I thought and thought about it and I I don't know what to [Applause] say like Hakeem Jeff I too want an America that's more joyful more inclusive more future focused just think what a burden it's been on us to get up day after day after day after day buried in meaningless hot rhetoric when there's so many opportunities out there so many problems that need to be solved I want that and that's the America KLA Harris relief she's already made her first presidential decision and she knocked it out of the park when she asked Governor him was to be her Nomine for vice president as they used to say uh when I was a young man growing up in Arkansas you do not have to be all broke out with brilliance you just look at Tim Walls listen to him follow his record as a teacher as a coach in the National Guard as a congressman where he was the only Democrat save one elected in that District in more than a hundred years and he stayed a long time and then he became a great governor and by all accounts he was a crackshot who had the courage among his rural constituents to say we do not need these assault weapons available to people who can kill our kids in school so armed with her first decision KLA Harris confronts an interesting dilemma we're going to walk out of here feeling pretty good I think we we've got energy we are happy we feel like a load's off our shoulders and we know we're just being asked to fight the same fight that the forces of progress have had to fight for 250 years in the face of stiff and often violent opposition we have to find a way to go forward together where we the people make our Union more perfect so that's a good thing how could we possibly lose KLA Harris has fought for kids her whole life that were left out and left behind she's taking on gangs trafficking across the border she's fought to protect the rights of homeowners she's been our leader in the fight for Reproductive freedoms and we know a majority of the American people are with us on that and she's gained an invaluable amount of experience as vice president advancing our values and interests around the world she's already said she's going to work really hard hard to make sure that no American working full-time lives in poverty or has to worry about their children living in PO he say that we got to make home ownership an achievable dream for everyone not just a privilege she said that it and this meant a lot to me that she would protect everybody's right to vote whether or not they voted for her they were a Citizens and they deserved the right to vote the other day her opponent implied that it's his feet voted people voted one more time they'd be able to rig it from now on and they wouldn't have to vote again you think they're kidding but I know a lot of these folks and most of them are really good people but some of them think that they are bound to dominate America politically economically and socially and they have to use politics to do it and they should rig the system I don't believe that and so here's what I want to tell you we've seen more than one election slip away from us when we thought it couldn't happen when people got distracted by phony issues or overc competent this is a brutal tough business I want you to be happy one of the reasons that president to be Harris is doing so well as it we're all so happy but you should never underestimate your adversary and these people are really good at distracting us at triggering doubt at triggering buyers Morris as the Obama said so eloquently last night they are human you know they're bound to make a mistake now and then we got to be tough and so as somebody who spends a lot of time in small towns and rural areas in New York and Arkansas and other places I I want I urge you to talk to all your neighbors I urge you to meet people where they are I urge you not to demean them but not to pretend you don't disagree with them if you do treat them with respect just the way you'd like them to treat you ask for their help and then follow our leader camela and ask them how can I help you we Democrats right now have a lot of hay in the barn we've got massive achievements massive [Music] advances but there's still a lot of slips between today and election day that we have to navigate and so I want to say this from the bottom of my heart I have no idea how many and more of these I'll be able to come to I started in 76 and I've been to everyone since but no 72 Lord I'm getting old but here's what I don't want you to know if you vote for this team if you she was the first woman to ever serve as Speaker of the House yes you know what's coming this woman was doing brat before brat was brat the Mother of Dragons please welcome Nancy Pelosi hello California hello Maryland hello Democrats on January 20th 2021 with the inauguration of Joe Biden and kamla Harris we established one of the most successful presidencies of modern times and we quickly proved that Democrats deliver millions of jobs stronger infrastructure and Rural broadband a CH a Biden child tax credit rescuing human pensions honoring our veterans bold climate action lowering the take us to new heights I've known kamla Harris for decades personally I know her a person of deep Faith which is reflected in her community care and service officially she is a leader of strength and with dignity and Grace and choosing Tim wals as our vice president I had the honor of serving serving with Tim for 12 years in the Congress he United Democrats Republicans and independents to turn a red District blue he showed courage when he came to Congress and voting for the Affordable Care Act meeting the needs of his constituents despite Republicans lies and misrepresentation when he went home won the election he returned to Congress he fought for our Americans Heroes as the Democratic leader of the Veterans Affairs committee thank you Tim January 6 was a perilous moment for our democracy never before had a president of the United States so brazenly assaulted the Bedrock of our democracy so gleefully embraced political violence so willfully betrayed his oath of office let us not forget who assaulted democracy on January 6 he did but let us not forget who saved democracy that day we did and thank God we had a democratic House of Representatives then we returned to the capital that very same night we insisted on certifying the election results on the floors of the house and the Senate and we demonstrated to America and to the world that American democracy prevailed point of view here it's a great uh great great Booth you have thank you very much well tell us a little bit about some of the speeches you've been taking in down here the messages we're hearing from on the stage you spoke earlier today as well this was fun I mean this was kind of the past and the future right you have Hakim Jeff the speaker to be I know him well I serve with him but he's a new face for the American people this is a great platform to talk about the future you also have the blessing in the transition from the parental figures right from Nancy Pelosi from Bill Clinton uh the heroes of of the past and now right with Nancy Pelosi being continually so active a mentor for hockey and dresses with the party really making the case drawing on the strength of the lessons of the past towards a prosperous future a joyous future uh and really leading the way to of course the deciding nomination tomorrow in speech of KLA Harris well with Minnesota Governor Tim Walls who is the headliner tonight what does what is it that a governor brings to the ticket that you think is needed in Washington uh I was thrilled that uh the KLA Harris's first major decision pulled in a governor with the experience to make it happen governor and is an executive role right it's a lot less partisan than some of the the discussions you see in Congress and state legislator look Governors deal with uh they deal with crisises they deal with fires they deal with highways they deal de with crime these are not partisan issues and Tim Walls is somebody who rolled up his sleeves and got things done he has experienced of course in Congress the lead and serving Veterans as Nancy Pelosi talked about but he's somebody who's the executive Experience day one to serve alongside kamla Harris that'll make a presidency successful you were speaking earlier today in another conversation and asked about some of the policies and proposals we've seen from the Harris walls ticket you've seem to indicate that some of what you've seen so far is a little bit too Progressive for your liking you said would I like to see more competitive progrowth Economic Policy of course so please correct me if I've mischaracterized your take on this but tell us what specifically you would like to see from this ticket in the way of policy well look and this is the beauty of the Big 10 right you have Adam keninger you have Republicans saying they support KL Harris they agree with her on a lot less than I agree with her on and I agree with her probably a 90% of her policies right uh of course I'm very excited about this transition from Joe Biden I'm hopeful KLA Harris will be a progrowth president continuing to lead on expanding markets for made in America growing in America Products be the leader on the international stage here at home I was excited to see the child tax credit tax relief for the middle class as part of that economic proposal we've done that in Colorado we can do it nationally and and yet uh a future potential future president Harris could not enact those proposals on her own on her own she'd need a democratic House and Senate Colorado is home to several competitive house races does having Harris walls campaign make you more confident uh that they'll be able to claim those races absolutely we have yir caraveo running hard a first term incumbent won by only over 500 votes uh having KLA Harris on top of the ticket is a big boost right this was if you had asked me three four weeks ago I'd say it's an uphill battle and I heard this from my friends running in competitive districts across the country I would call it moving from an uphill battle to a dead heat for control of the house that's where it stands today we've heard a lot from the speakers on stage last night in particular and and tonight as well reminding people not to take this energy this momentum for granted that there's 76 days left now and it feels like there's a maybe a shadow of 2016 looming over this room a little bit tell us a little bit about what you think needs to happen especially given I want to reference a conversation Jeff Bennett had earlier with congressman kurn who basically said buying tv ads isn't enough yeah you know when it's really 76 days is misleading because in States like Colorado and many states that have mail in ballots it's 3 4 weeks before that that those ballots hit and people start voting so that election starts before you know it I mean we're talking 50 days 55 days people are going to start getting ballots and of course it goes right through uh the November election but I mean this is a mobilization of the democratic party soldiers here these are the folks that are going to be going door too making the calls working not only of course in the seven or eight competitive states that will likely determine the presidency but also working on all those down races control of state legislatures county officials all of the different races that really make an important uh impact on the future of our country Colorado hasn't voted for a republican for president since 2004 is there anything for the the Harris campaign to worry about this this election cycle we we got it I mean really Colorado is a state where unaffiliated voters are a strong plurality I mean they're going to be a majority soon 48% of the the voters in our state they'll be over 50 soon but Donald Trump does not appeal to those voters right I personally don't understand his full appeal he appeals to some people but uh he's not the type of Republican that's competitive in Colorado and frankly coloradans are excited about KLA Harris's forward-looking joyous vision for our future and I'm confident she's going to win the state we heard former President Bill Clinton say that she would be a president of Joy this notion of of campaigning on Joy and hope and optimism help us understand why you feel like that that's a resonant strategy you know it's funny because that was actually a tenant in my campaign I said we're going to have a joyous campaign was one of my three principles cuz this is hard work I mean running for office is hard I think when you're having fun and those around you are part of that fun people see that people sense that uh KLA Harris is the right person and the Right leader for the moment she's leading us and she will lead with joy and with fun right right from some of those coconut tree memes early on did you just fall out of the coconut tree to I'm sure that what we're going to be hearing from her tomorrow night she's going to take us along on frankly a ride that America needs a ride of unity a ride of Joy moving p the chaos and divided days of the past towards a BRI future speaking of having fun and you have to tell us the truth here in your remarks you quoted some Taylor Swift lyrics was that your idea it was yeah I got my little uh there you go you're Swifty absolutely I'm a Swifty and it was fun to bring that to the main stage we appreciate that we appreciate your time Colorado governor Jared poas thank you so much for being here with us thank you let's take a listen in on the floor right now as the speeches continue here on the third night of the Democratic National Convention so deeply that is the kamla Harris that I love a woman of the people a woman a fierce woman for the people good night Democrats please welcome former US associate Attorney General of the United States and the vice president's brother-in-law Tony [Music] West 35 years ago in my first week at law school I met a new classmate Maya Harris we became best friends but but the way kamla tells the story we'd already fallen in love by graduation day and when Maya and I married I not only gained a life partner I love a daughter I adore and a mother-in-law I revered someone I affectionately called mother Harris I also gained a sister a sister I cherish kamla now Maya kamla and I each pursue different different legal careers but we were motivated by the same values a belief and equal opportunity a yearning for fairness a passion for justice values mother Harris taught those two little girls values that powered kamla's public service from the very beginning you know one of kamla's very first cases in the District Attorney's office it involved a woman an innocent woman wrongfully arrested in a police raid it it was a Friday afternoon and and the courthouse was shutting down for the weekend and look most prosecutors they would have gone home and dealt with the matter the following Monday but not Kamala you see my sister-in-law knew that if the judge didn't see this woman that afternoon she'd spend the entire weekend in jail and kamla she wondered does this woman work weekends would she lose her job does she have young kids at home who'd feed those kids so kamla pleaded for the judge to return to the bench and to hear the matter and the judge agreed and within minutes that woman was released back to her family that night now it it may seem small but that's what it means to stand up for justice that's that's what it means to stand for the people and as KLA says when you know what you stand for you know what to fight for and and look believe me when I tell you as a sister a daughter an auntie and a mother I've seen kamla fight for her family as district attorney Attorney General US senator and vice president of the United States I have watched her fight in the halls of power for those who have no voice there and as president I know I know she'll fight for you she'll fight for all of us bit to the speech we heard from the former President Bill Clinton uh because he he he vouched for KLA Harris he took the crowd through her life story he affirmed the promise for the country that that she that he thinks that she embodies he said the country would be more inclusive and more future focused in a a Harris presidency right how did all of that strike you um you know we talked about him being the explainer and chief in 2012 for Obama this was not that speech I think what he was providing is the Bill Clinton Playbook the uh what he ran on in 1992 and 1996 this idea of like what a campaign it's supposed to be about it's as he said it has to be forward not backward bringing people together instead of tearing them apart who do you want as president and that's the thing we're going to be talking about a lot after this convention ends is for those people who are not in this room for the people who haven't made a decision on at this election what they are looking for is who is the person who is going to be speaking to me um and how he uh how he B Bill Clinton comes at campaigns is very much from that perspective so you know was it the high energy Bill Clinton from 2012 or 1992 the man from hope no it was not but was it the voice of someone who's been through a lot of these campaigns who's been successful who's watched successful candidates at this um convention telling the young people here who's basically anyone under the age of 78 um that uh you're going to have to leave here and you're going to have to convince voters that she is up to the job of being president because she's able to do the things that Donald Trump cannot we should say that our very own Judy Woodruff now joins our conversation here as night three of the Democratic National Convention coverage continues it's great to have you here thank you great to be here so your Reflections on the many speeches that we've heard this evening well picking up on Bill Clinton I'm thinking back to this was after he was President it was his voice that was saying in the Hillary Clinton campaign in 2016 that she needed to reach out more to workingclass American they he wanted them to campaign in places that they ended up not spending as much time in as some people thought Pennsylvania Wisconsin so um I'm I I was looking at him and listening and they kept the camera kept cutting to to Hillary and their daughter Chelsea and I was I kept thinking about what might have been and what you know those those stories that um that could have been told um so looking back but as as Amy Says looking ahead I mean he you know he' very much love for the Democrats to stay in power what was it he said was he the one who complimented uh George Washington yes that that he he knew him back back at time right when he stepped but the the to just to add on to Judy's Point um I remember in 2016 sitting in focused groups of Voters in places like Pennsylvania and you know they were just down on politics they down on both the candidates and so the moderator would ask them all right so who's the last politician you liked and they said oh Bill Clinton you know Bill Clinton understood us Bill Clinton was there for us and all those folks end up voting for Donald Trump all right that that shift from Bill Clinton voter to Donald Trump voter has been just as consequential as the Mitt Romney voter that shifted over to uh Joe Biden Jonathan and David you know as we're watching the spe speeches unfold on stage there's more to come of course we're going to hear from Governor Tim Walls himself it strikes me conventions are about making these moments right you want to have some of those breakout speeches that people will be talking about for days the moments that really resonate with folks and Laura Bron Lopez mentioned the family earlier who son is still being held the American citizen still being held hostage uh by Hamas and the moment here in the room man that speech by House minority leader hakee Jeff though Jonathan that was one of those moments where the whole room just lit up and caught on to what he was saying right because they knew it was coming the moment he came on stage um I'm I'm trying to remember when he came in as minority leader in the well of this of the house he delivered this speech where he basically went through the alphabet no notes nothing and just brought everyone to their Democrats not everyone Democrats to their feet but he prosecuted by Prosecuting the case against the Republicans going through the alphabet in this way that you I later learn that he and his brother you know growing up in Brooklyn and you know being rap officiate not would try to you know go back and throw Rhymes at each other I'm showing my age and also I'm a jazz man not a rap man so I should defer to David on this he knows more about that than I do but so for him to come on this stage and give that speech they were waiting for it they were hungry for it and the thing about leader Jeff is he is more than happy to give it to them and he always does David what' you make event yeah no I thought it was an outstanding speech I thought it was one of the top five I would put up with with the Obamas and another speech which I thought was outstanding before I get to that let me just mention Rachel the the mom of the of the of the hostage I interviewed her about 100 days ago with her husband John uh and she had mentioned that she had a tendency in B big crowds to break down and fall on the floor in pain and there was a moment when the crowd was kept prolonged exchange and she fell on the podium and you just I guess it's in these big moments that the whole pressure of her situation just hits her like a wall and to her credit she was able to get back up and give the speech but to me that was just a profoundly moving moment absolutely the other one I wanted to mention uh to get her back to more conventional politician we didn't get to talk about this yesterday because there was so much going on but Angela also Brooks who's running for Senate in Maryland aside from having an awesome name uh uh she uh she said something that I thought was actually psychologically very profound which is that we've been frozen in fear by Donald Trump yeah and she said it's not only our politics that's been trapped it's our imagination and then when KLA lifted the fear then the imagination could be wider and to me that's maybe my main takeaway so far from this convention the shift in emotional tone that we've all been talking about and the sense that you fear is such a powerful emotion that shrivels you up inside and causes that fear response that that fight ORF flight response or really a cowering in and even when fighting Donald Trump I think the Democrats had that fearful response which is a tight Flex tensed up response and you can just feel everybody going well maybe we don't need to be that way and that's amazing let's head back to the convention stage to listen to Pennsylvania Governor Josh [Applause] [Music] Shapiro thank you 2 and 1 half centuries ago in Philadelphia a band Patriots declare their independence from a king and set ourselves on a path of self-determination generation after generation has embraced that responsibility ordinary Americans rising up demanding more Seeking Justice and in every chapter of our American story we've made progress and advanced the cause of Freedom today well today we find ourselves writing that next chapter will we be a nation defined by chaos and extremism or will we choose a path of decency honor and continued progress KLA Harris well she has spent her entire career making progress Donald Trump a man with no guard rails wants to take away our rights and our freedoms and listen while he cloaks himself in the blanket of Freedom what he's offering isn't Freedom at all because hear me on this it's not freedom to tell our children what books they're allowed to read no it's not and it's it's not freedom to tell women what they can do with their bodies and hear me on this it sure as hell isn't freedom to say you can go vote but he gets to pick the winner that's not freedom but you know what you know what Democrats we we are the party of real freedom that's right the kind of real Freedom that comes when that child has a great public school with an awesome teacher because we believe in her future real Freedom real Freedom that comes when we invest in the police and in the community so that child can walk to and from school and get home safely to her mama real Freedom real Freedom that comes when she can join a union marry who she loves start a family on her own terms breathe clean air drink pure water worship how she wants and live a life of purpose where she is respected for who she is real Freedom real Freedom that comes when she can look at Madam president and know that this is a nation where anything and everything is possible that is real freedom and that is what we are fighting for you know kamla and Tim's names Maybe on the ballot but it's your rights it's our rights it's our future and freedoms that are on the line and you have the power to shape the future of this country just like our ancestors our ancestors who fought for freedom on the battlefield and sat in at lunch counters so our kids could stand up now now it's on us it's on us uh with a single mom and she really imbued in me these qualities that you just really have to care about your neighbors and your family and your friends I feel like the American dream is having opportunities having opportunity to go to college if you want to having opportunity to get any job you can no matter who you are or where you come from the American Dre dream is about having the ability to to make choices about your medical care and do whatever you want to do with your life without anybody telling you if it's good we are in an incredible moment in history we've seen women stripped of their most fundamental right to autonomy over their bodies the freedom to make choices about your body your life your career should be entirely in your control but I have found that good people want to do good things that you find a way to move forward under ugly and scary circumstances the work that lies ahead is to make America live up to its highest ideals and uh you know we're proud to go to work the work to build a better future really depends on all of us coming together we have to bring back that respect for everyone I don't think we're as divided as we seem let's come together as one big nation I feel like we are on the verge of something very amazing in this country it makes me want to fight for our children and and future generations to ensure they have just as many if not more freedoms than we had I believe in a future where my mom can feel safe no matter where she is in the country a future that is filled with a healthy and vibrant planet where families some epic fire we're now so fired up we can't wait to leave here and do something and what we're going to do is elect colon Harris as the next president of the United States I am so honored to have been asked to speak on tonight's theme about what matters most to me to you and all of us Americans Freedom there are people who want you to see our country as a nation of us against them people who want to scare you who want to rule you people who'd have you believe that books are dangerous and assault rifles are safe that there's a right way to worship and a wrong way to love people who seek first to divide and then to conquer but here's the thing when we stand together it is impossible to conquer Us in the words of an extraordinary American the late Congressman John Lewis he said no matter what ship our ancestors arrived on we are all all in the same boat now Congressman Lewis knew very well how far this country has come because he was one of the brilliant Americans who helped to get us where we are but he also knew that the work is not done the work will never be done because Freedom isn't free America is an ongoing project it requires commitment it requires being open to the heart hard work and the heart work of democracy and every now and then it requires standing up to Life's bullies I know this I've lived in Mississippi in Tennessee in Wisconsin Maryland Indiana Florida Hawaii Colorado California and California and Sweet Home Chicago Illinois I have actually traveled this country from the Redwood Forest love those redwoods to The Gulfstream Waters I've seen racism and sexism and income inequality and division I've not only seen it at times I've been on the receiving end of it but more often than not what I've witnessed and experienced are human beings both conservative and liberal who may not agree with each other but who'd still help you in a heartbeat if you were in trouble these are the people who make me proud to say that I am an American they are the best of America and despite what some would have you think we are not so different from our neighbors when a house is on fire we don't ask about the homeowner's race or religion we don't wonder who their partner is or how they voted no we just try to do the best we can to save them and if the place place happens to belong to a childless cat lady well we try to get that cat out too cuz as we are a country of people who work hard for the money we wish our brothers and sisters well and we pray for peace we know all the old tricks and tropes that are designed to distract us from what actually matters but we are Beyond ridiculous tweets and lies and Foolery these are complicated times people and they require adult conversation and I welcome those conversations because civilized debate is vital to democracy and it is the best of America now over the last couple of nights we have all seen brave people walk onto this stage and share their most private pain Amanda and Josh Caitlyn Hatley they told us their stories of rape and ESS and near-death experiences from having the state deny them the abortion that their doctor explained was medically necessary and they've told us these things for one reason and that is to keep what happened to them from happening to anybody else because if you do not have autonomy over this over this if you cannot control when and how you choose to bring your children into this world and how they are raised and supported there is no American Dream the women and men who are battling to keep us from going back to a time of desperation and shame and Stone Cold fear they are the New Freedom Fighters and make no mistake they are the best of America I want to talk now about somebody who's not with us tonight Tessy privos Williams was born in New Orleans not long after the Supreme Court rule that segregated Public Schools were unconstitutional that was in 1954 same year I was born but I didn't have to head to first grade at the all-white McDonna 19 school with a US Marshall by my side like Tessy did and when I got to school the building wasn't empty like it was for Tessy you see rather than allowing Madonna to be integrated parents pull their kids out of the school leaving only Tessy and two other little black girls Gail etian and Leona Tate to sit in a classroom with the windows papered over to block snipers from attacking their six-year-old bodies Tessy passed away six weeks ago and I tell this story to honor her tonight because she she like Ruby Bridges and her friends Le a and Gail the New Orleans four they were called they broke barriers and they paid dearly for it but it was the grace and guts and courage of women like Tessy Pros Williams that paved the way for another young girl who n years later became part of the second class to integrate the public schools in Berkeley California and it seems to me that at school and at home somebody did a beautiful job of showing this young girl how to challenge the people at the top and empower the people at the bottom they showed her how to look at the world and see not just what is but what can be they instilled in her a passion for justice and freedom and the Glorious fighting Spirit NE necessary to pursue that passion and soon and very soon soon and very soon we're going to be teaching our daughters and sons about how this child of an Indian mother and a Jamaican father two idealistic energetic immigrants immigrants how this child grew up to become the 47th president of the United States that is the best of America you know you know let me tell you this this election isn't about us and them it's about you and me and what we want our futures to look like there are choices to be made when we cast our ballot now there's a certain candidate that says if we just go to the polls this one time that we'll never have to do it again well you know what you're looking at a registered independent who's proud to vote again and again and again because I'm an American and that's what Americans do voting is the best of America and I have always since I was eligible to vote I've always voted my best values and that is what is needed in this election now more than ever so I'm calling on all you Independence and all you undecided you know this is true you know I'm telling you the truth that values and character matter most of all in leadership and in life and more than anything you know this is true that decency and respect are on the ballot in 2024 and and just plain common sense Common Sense tells you that kamla Harris and Tim walz can give us decency and respect they're the ones to give it to us so we are Americans we are Americans let us choose loyalty to the Constitution over loyalty to any individual because because that's the best of America and let us choose optimism over cynicism because that's the best of America and let us choose inclusion over retribution let us choose Common Sense over nonsense because that's the best of America and let us choose the sweet promise of tomorrow tomorrow over the bitter return to yesterday we won't go back we won't be set back push back bullied back kicked back we're not going back not going back we're not going back so let us choose let us choose truth let us choose honor and let us choose Joy because that's the best of America but more than about Tim Walls well everybody at man West High School loved Tim Walls yeah I mean Tim was jovial when he would start teaching it was like full contact teaching you could not help but be interested in in what he was talking about he seemed to care about everybody in his class he knew everyone's name he wanted to know what interested you how to engage you what you were excited about what you're feeling bad about Mr walls was my geography and social studies teacher Mr walls was my football coach my middle school basketball coach when we were doing the high school play the nerd he was the person building the sets I don't think that there uh has ever been a moment where I've seen Tim exhausted from giving or engaging he always seems like that person that's got the never ending gas tank who can keep going when I decided to come out as gay we started the gay trade Alliance Tim Walls was The Faculty adviser we saw him not only as a teacher but a mentor and a leader Mr walls was a was a really big part in in help helping build this community and he's a big reason why I became a teacher myself it was inspiring being in in his classroom please welcome Maryland governor Wes Moore [Applause] thank you thank you on March 26th at 1:30 in the morning a container ship the length of three football fields slammed into the Francis Scott Key bridge in Baltimore and the bridge collapsed a port that drives 133% of our state's economy was now closed thousands of workers were hours away from waking up and realizing they no longer had a job six marylanders who had been on the bridge in the middle of the night fixing potholes lost their lives and one of the first phone calls that I got that morning started with these three words Dov it's kamla she said I know you spoke to the president and I want you to know we are here with you every step of the way now I I joined the army when I was 17 in fact I was too young to sign the paperwork I had to ask my mom to sign the paperwork for me because I don't have bone [Applause] spurs I led soldiers in combat in Afghanistan stand and my training my training taught me that you never learn anything about anybody when times are easy you learn everything you need to know about somebody when times are hard and when the temperature gets turned up and America I saw that kamla Harris is the right one to lead in this moment firsthand and United with the almighty God's grace we brought closure to the families of the six victims and while many said it could take 11 months to reopen the Port of Baltimore we got it done in 11 weeks because that is the story of America we are a nation of patriots who serve when the mission is hard and who serve when the destination is uncertain and I know our history is imperfect the unevenness of the American journey has made some skeptical but I'm not asking you to give up your skepticism I just want that skepticism to be your companion and not your captor and I'm asking that you join us in the work because making America great doesn't mean telling people you're not wanted and loving your country does not mean lying about its history making America great means saying the Ambitions of this country would be incomplete without your help it's the legacy of those six workers who fixed potholes on a bridge while we slept who were born in a different country but who knew that America was big enough for them too it's the journey it's the Journey of a man raised by a remarkable immigrant single mom a man who felt handcuffs on his wrist at 11 years old who now stands before you as the 63rd governor of Maryland and the first black governor in the history of our state it's the story it's the story of a prosecutor who defended our freedoms and had Maryland's back when we needed it most and now MVP we've got your back as well right it's my fellow veteran my brother and the next Vice President of the United States Tim Walls and now Tim Tim knows that in the military you count the days towards Mission completion so guess what y'all we have got 75 days and a wake up until election day 75 days in a wake up for us to prove what Americans can do when the Democrats thank you Chicago here's a sentence I never thought I'd hear myself saying I'm Pete bajed and you might recognize me from Fox News I believe in going anywhere anywhere in service of a good cause and Friends We Gather in a very good cause electing kamla Harris and Tim Walls the next president and vice president of the United States the choice could not be clearer Donald Trump rants about Law and Order as if he wasn't a convicted criminal running against a prosecutor as if we were going to forget that crime was higher on his watch talks about the Forgotten man hoping will'll forget that the only economic promise that he actually kept was to cut taxes for the rich and don't even get me started on his new running mate [Applause] at least Mike Pence was polite JD Vance is one of those guys who thinks if you don't live the life that he has in mind for you then you don't count someone who said that if you don't have kids you have quote no physical commitment to the future of this country [Applause] you know Senator when I deployed to Afghanistan I didn't have kids then many of the men and women who went outside the wire with me didn't have kids either but let me tell you our commitment to the future of this country was pretty damn physical choosing ching A guy like JD Vance to be America's Next vice president sends a message and the message is that they are doubling down on negativity and grievance committing to a concept of campaigning best summed up in one word Darkness Darkness is what they are selling the thing is I just don't believe that America today is in the market for Darkness I believe America is ready for a better kind of politics yes politics at its worst can be ugly crushing demeaning but it doesn't have to be at its best politics can be empowering uplifting it can even be a kind of soulcraft my faith teaches me that the world isn't made up of good people and bad people but rather that that each of us is capable of good and bad things and I believe leaders matter because of what they bring out in each of us the good or the bad right now the other side is appealing to what is smallest within you they're telling you that greatness comes from going back to the past they're telling you that anyone different from you is a threat they're telling you that your neighbor or nephew or daughter who disagrees with you politically isn't just wrong but is now the enemy I believe in a better politics one that finds us at our most decent and open and brave the kind of politics that kamla Harris and Tim Walls are offering and as you have felt these many days that kind of politics also just feels better to be part of there is joy in it as well as power and if all of that sounds naive let me insist that I have come to this view not by way of idealism but by way of experience not just the experience of my unlikely career someone like me serving in Indiana serving in Washington serving in uniform I'm thinking of something much more basic I'm thinking of dinner time at our house in [Music] Michigan when the dog is barking and the air fryer is beeping and the mac and cheese is boiling over and it feels like all the political negotiating experience in the world is not enough for me to get our three-year-old son and our three-year-old daughter to just wash their hands and sit at the table it's the part of our day when politics seems the most distant and yet the makeup of our kitchen table the existence of my family it's just one example of something that was literally impossible as recently as 25 years ago when an anxious teenager growing up in Indiana wondered if he would ever find belonging in this world this kind of Life went from impossible to possible from possible to real from real to almost ordinary in less than half a lifetime but that didn't just happen it was brought about through idealism and courage through organizing and persuasion and storytelling and yes through politics the right kind of Politics the kind of politics that can make an Impossible Dream into an everyday reality I don't presume to know what it's like in your kitchen but I know as sure as I am standing here that everything in it the bills you pay at that table the shape of the family that sits there the fears and the dreams that you talk about late into the night there all of it compels us to demand more from our politics than a rerun of some TV wrestling death match so this November we get to choose we get to choose our President we get to choose our policies but most of all we will choose a better politics a politics that calls us to our better selves and offers us a better every day that is what kamla Harris and Tim Walls represent that is what Democrats represent that is what awaits us when America decides to end Trump's politics of Darkness once and for all that is what we choose when we embrace the leaders who are out there Building Bridges and reject the ones who are out there baning books Laura tell us a little bit about how the speeches have been going over with the folk you're talking to well I spoke to Angie garetto she is a delegate from Pennsylvania 95 years old omna she is the oldest delegate in attendance here at the convention second oldest to Jimmy Carter she's been a delegate since the 1976 Democratic Convention and she's really said that she has loved all of the speeches uh she's very excited to be here she said that she hopes to hear from kamla Harris tomorrow that Harris cares about everyone and that her top issues are abortion the economy and she's really concerned about hatred she says there's too much hatred in the country right now she also says that she thinks Harris is going to make more young people interested in politics and her message to those younger voters is that they should vote that this is the quote chance of a lifetime to get a woman into office and she said it's not just because she's a woman that she'd like to see that but that uh she says women are protective and that it's time to give women a chance she also told me that she thought President Biden did the right right thing by stepping aside Onna Lopez all right let's head in these speeches along with us we've heard from a number of folks just reflect on what we've been hearing so far what stands out to you this evening well I want to talk about um secretary Pete's speech um you know like yesterday with Michelle Obama being seen with secretary Pete you know out gay man married two children and I love I don't have the exact words but you're talking about the sweep of his story you know 255 years he's gone from an impossible dream of have being a gay man and having a family to being that gay man married with the family and going from impossible to ordinary which is really what all Americans want is just a basic ordinary life with no one telling them what they telling them how to lead their lives this focus on freedom we're hearing again and again we expect that message to be repeated more by senator Amy kashar of Minnesota she's taking the stage now let's listen in that was a warmup act on behalf of the great state of Minnesota where purple Reigns I stand before you in support of our next vice president Tim Walls in Minnesota we trust a coach who turned a team that was Zer and 27 into state champions in Minnesota we trust a hunter who has stood in a deer stand in 10 degree weather in Minnesota we trust a candidate who has made a viral video on how to change a burnt out headlight and I know we aren't alone but in Minnesota we love a dad in plaid so Tim and I go way back he taught High School right down the road from where my husband John grew up my mother-in-law even brought him and Gwen a Parmesan chicken dinner when their son was born that's what we do in America we look out for our neighbors Tim has been doing that his whole life on the farm and in the factory with his students and his fellow service members and the truth is that matters who better to take on the price of gas than a guy who could pull over to help change your tire who better to serve our nation than a guy who has served in uniform who better to find Common Ground than a guy with Midwestern common sense a former football coach knows how to level the play playing field and a former public school teacher knows how to school the likes of JD Vance what you've done with your life matters and what you do with power matters too Tim has delivered paid leave school lunches and the biggest tax cut in Minnesota History a Democrat from a red District in a purple State Tim has brought Minnesota together and together with vice president kamla Harris I know he will do the same for our nation America there is so much that we share so much that connects us way up north in Minnesota out of Lake itasa flows the Mississippi River it starts small and it grows wider it flows down to Wisconsin and to Iowa it goes down to Illinois and to Missouri it goes goes to Kentucky and Tennessee it goes to Arkansas and it goes way down to Mississippi and then it goes all the way down to New Orleans Louisiana where the spirit of our nation's resilience abounds so let us commit here and now to cross the river of our divide to get to a higher ground and let us join together to elect kamla Harris and Tim Walls please welcome Ben Ingman from [Applause] Minnesota Tim Walls is the kind of guy you can count on to push you out of a snowbank I know this because Tim Walls has pushed me out of a snowbank I grew up next door uh to the walles in Mano Mr walls was also my geography teacher and my coach not for high school football but for seventh grade basketball and trap so what was a high school football coach doing coaching seventh grade basketball and trap well there was a kid in the high school who couldn't afford to pay for lunch and he ran up a lot of debt and Tim and Gwen decided they'd help pay it off they started calling around the district to see if there were any positions they could bill to make a little extra money and that's how he wound up coaching us seventh graders that's right coach walls got us excited about what we might achieve together he believed in us and he helped us believe in each other and his leadership stuck that track team went on to win a State title just like the football team that's right speaking of which come on out Scarlets [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] w [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] you know all this got me thinking about the kinds of leaders we need we want the people in charge to be genuine compassionate and trustworthy the thing is there are people in our neighborhoods who fit this description the kind of people who display quiet leadership by helping kids pay for their lunches by bringing teams together to believe in each other and when we're stuck in the snow they push us out well in my neighborhood we all Sor we always wish that people like that would run for office well in my neighborhood someone like that did run for office and he's going to be a wonderful vice president thanks very much out here in the wide open spaces we are reminded of the values we share a commitment to community country and standing up for what's right Tim Walls grew up in a small town in Nebraska where he spent Summers working the Family Farm there were just 24 students in his graduating class his dad served during the Korean War and that meant a lot to Tim so he enlisted right after his 17th birthday and served 24 years in the National Guard rising to command sergeant major Tim went to college on the GI Bill and became a social studies teacher that's where Tim and I met we shared a classroom with a divider right down the middle his classroom was a lot louder than mine but I could hear how engaged his students were Tim taught for over 15 years and he coached football helping lead the team to a state championship after zero wins just a few years before Tim taught them how to believe in themselves and that we all in this together when one of our students started the school's gay straight Alliance Tim agreed to serve as faculty adviser because he knew how impactful it would be to have a footb football coach involved he inspired his students and he changed lives he is just so joyful in everything that he does but I think also standing up for you know what he believes to be right stands up to bullies then Tim's students inspired him to run for Congress in southern Minnesota Tim spent a lot of time working with Republicans fighting to help farmers and expanding veterans benefits whether it was in Congress or as Governor his Focus has always been helping working people like those he grew up with that's why he fought for the largest tax cut in Minnesota State history but Tim Walls was there for small businesses like ours with the urging of Governor walls we were able to pass the Alex Smith insulin affordability act and it has saved lives in Minnesota with Tim as Governor Minnesota is one of the best places to raise a family and one of the best states for business Tim's a lifelong Hunter and gun owner but after the Sandy Hook school shooting he knew that we had to do something so he's fought for background checks and red flag laws but of all the things he's done Tim loves being a dad we struggled to have kids and fertility treatments made it possible there's a reason our daughter is named hope hope and Gus mean the world to us Governor walls making good on a promise to his son and family yesterday by getting them a puppy then we're going to go get some food corn dog I'm vegetarian turkey then and then turkey's me not a Minnesota turkey special he's as at home on a farm a fishing boat a football field or a factory floor as he is on the floor of Congress Tim's commitment to service all comes back to the values we grew up with love your country help your neighbor and fight for what's right because that's what America is all about two middle class kids one a daughter of Oakland California the other a son of the Nebraska Plains only in America beautiful simple reason we love this country so thank you to all of you here in Chicago and all of you watching at home tonight thank you for your passion thank you for your determination and most of all thank you for bringing the joy to this fight now I grew up in but Nebraska a town of 400 people I had 24 kids in my high school class and none of them went to Yale but I'll tell you what growing up in a small town like that you learn how to take care of each other that that family down the road they may not think like you do they may not pray like you do they may not love like you do but they're your neighbors and you look out for them and they look out for you everybody belongs and everybody has a responsibility to contribute for me it was serving in the Army National Guard I joined up two days after my 17th birthday and I proudly wore our nation's uniform for 24 years years my dad a Korean War era Army veteran died of lung cancer a couple years later he left behind a mountain of medical debt thank God for Social Security survivor benefits and thank God for the GI bill that allowed my dad and me to go to college and millions of other Americans eventually like the rest of my family I fell in love with teaching three three out of four of us married teachers I wound up teaching social studies and coaching football at Mano West High School go Scarlets we ran we ran a 44 defense we played through to the whistle on every single play and we even won a state championship never closed the yearbook people but it was those players and my students who inspired me to run for Congress they saw in me what I had hoped to instill in them a commitment to the common good and understanding that we're all in this together and the belief that a single person can make a real difference for their neighbors so there I was a 40 something High School teacher with little kids zero political experience and no money running in a deep red District but you know what never underestimate a public school teacher now I represented my neighbors in Congress for 12 years and I learned an awful lot I learned how to work across the aisle on issues like growing the rural economies and taking care of veterans and I learned how to compromise without compromising my values then I came back to serve as governor and we got right to work making a difference in our neighbors lives we cut taxes for the middle class we passed Paid Family and Medical Leave we invested in fighting crime and affordable housing we cut the cost of prescription drugs and help people escape the kind of medical debt that nearly sank my family and we made sure that every kid in our state gets breakfast and lunch every day so while other states were Banning books from their schools we were banishing Hunger from ours we also protected reprod Ive freedom because in Minnesota we respect our neighbors and the personal choices they make and even if we wouldn't make those same choices for ourselves we've got a golden rule mind your own damn business and that includes ibf and fertility treatments this is personal for Gwen and and I if you've never experienced the hell that is infertility I guarantee you you know somebody who has and I can remember praying each night for a phone call The Pit in your stomach when the phone had rang and the absolute agony when we heard the treatments hadn't worked it took Gwen and I years but we had access to fertility treatments and when our daughter was born we named her hope hope Gus and Gwen you are my entire world and I love you I'm letting you in on how we started a family because this is a big part about what this election is about Freedom when when Republicans use the word Freedom they mean that the government should be free to invade your doctor's office corporations free to pollute your air in water and banks free to take advantage of customers but when we Democrats talk about Freedom we mean the freedom to make a better life for yourself and the people that you love freedom to make your own healthare decisions and yeah your kids freedom to go to school without worrying about being shot dead in the hall look I know guns I'm a veteran I'm a Hunter and I was a better shot than most republicans in Congress and I got the trophies to prove it but I'm also a dad I believe in the Second Amendment but I also believe our first responsibility is to keep our kids safe that's what this is all about the responsibility we have to our kids to each other and to the Future that we're building together in which everyone is free to build the kind of Life they want but not everyone has that same sense of responsibility some folks just don't understand what it takes to be a good neighbor take Donald Trump and JD Vance their project 2025 will make things much much harder for people who are just trying to live their lives they spent a lot of time pretending they know nothing about this but look I coached High School football long enough to know and trust me on this when somebody takes the time to draw up a Playbook they're going to use it and and we know if these guys get back in the White House they'll start jacking up the costs on the middle class they'll repeal the Affordable Care Act they'll gut Social Security and Medicare and they will ban abortion across this country with or without Congress here's the thing it's an agenda nobody asked for it's a agenda that serves nobody except the richest and the most extreme amongst us and it's an agenda that does nothing for our neighbors in need is it weird absolutely abs abolutely but it's also wrong and it's dangerous it's not just me saying so it's Trump's own people they were with him for four years they're warning us that the next four years will be much much worse you know when I was teaching every year we'd elect a student body president and you know what those teenagers could teach Donald Trump a hell of a lot about what a leader is leaders don't spend all day insulting people and blaming others leaders do the work so I don't know about you I'm ready to turn the page on these guys so go ahead say it with me we're not going [Applause] back we've got something better to offer the American people it starts with our candidate kamla Harris from her first day as a prosecutor as a district attorney as an attorney general as a United States Senator and then our vice president she's fought on the side of the American people she's taken on the Predators and frauders she's taken down the transnational gangs and she stood up to powerful corporate interest she has never hesitated to reach across that aisle if it meant improving your lives and she's always done it with energy with passion and with joy folks we've got a chance to make KLA Harris the next president of the United States but I think we owe it to the American people to tell them exactly what she'd do as president before we ask him for their votes so here him deliver these remarks tonight this is not a speech that he was planning on giving just a few weeks ago uh because he didn't know he was going to be vice president just a few weeks ago yes that is very much the pace um and uh what I thought was so interesting about his speech tonight you know we talk about Bill Clinton as being the explainer and chief I think that's what uh Tim Walls did tonight explaining who she was who he was but also just those simple thing that simple message he had where he said clip and save this right here's what she believes in here's what she's going to do on prescription drugs on tax cuts from middle class just kept that very focused on the people outside of this Stadium for the people in here gave a pep talk about who they were what they need to do next very coach oriented about what needs to happen once they leave but as I said for the people who are undecided it was that section of saying in the most succinct way possible this is who we are and this is what we believe in a very emotional walls extended family on the stage now we saw him joined by his wife Gwen his 17-year-old son Gus and his 23-year-old daughter Pope uh Judy wood your Reflections on the evening well he he is the coach I mean this was the pep rally that's what he said it was at the end he got more specific than anybody all night long I think in terms of what kamla Harris will do he said you're going to he's going to cut she's going to cut your taxes if you're in the middle class she's going to protect your Reproductive Rights um and he ticked off several uh points he said he's going to make your buying a home more affordable most of this night was taken with folks talking about frankly values about Freedom about Truth uh and and frankly about spiritual things love and honor yeah so this was a a very touchy feely night uh and I think it set up what he had to say really well David it was striking the ways in which Democrats tried to reclaim the mantle of patriotism this evening just going to say that when my son was uh going around canvasing for an environmental cause the organizer said don't go to FL houses with American flags out front cuz they're probably Republicans and this this was a lavishly patriotic night and and Waltz was emblematic of that almost like a walking Norman Rockwell we saw a lot of brilliant very eloquent speakers he's not that but he's a guy we know and he seems to have Liv a life like most of us Liv And there's just power in that Jonathan a line that he delivered there as a motto he's adopted mind your own damn business mind mind your own damn business very common sense Midwestern American values I mean all Americans no matter where they live just mind your own damn business am I allowed to say that well we've said it now okay we've said it you know I want to pick up on what David the question was asking David about the mantle of patriotism Governor West Moore didn't didn't mention it in his speech that in his run for governor he made it his mission to reclaim the word patriotism for Democrats because for too long Republicans had owned it as treated as their own property we've been I've been looking at USA signs people holding them up and I will tell you for years when I would hear USA USA chanted particularly at Republican rallies it felt menacing because those folks made it clear that USA I was not meant to be a part of it and I think with Democrats holding up the signs they're say no no no no USA applies to us freedom applies to US service to the country applies to us um patriotism applies to us this is our country too and the other thing that makes this much more I don't know celebratory is they're saying and we want that for our fellow Americans too so vote forla Harrison Tim Walls so we can all do this together looking at the last three nights I mean help us understand the kind of foundation that has been set now for kamla Harris's speech tomorrow night well the one thing she needs to do is fill in the economic Hole uh that is still tonight there is no like how are we going to make growing economy how are we going have a growing economy she has to do that
