Behind the Lens: Hummingbirds

Every time I watch the film, I think about just two young girls having fun and we're just messing around and running around and pranking people and being silly and loud.

And I think it's like a diary, right?

Of just that moment of our lives.

I mean it is about abortion and immigration and all of these very difficult topics.

But I also feel like it is a film that does not romanticize those aspects of our lives and does not focus on that.

We also just didn't want to make another film in which we are the victims of the system and like and like, yes, we are, right?

But I think also I want to be joyful despite and have fun despite.

I've had a lot of people come up to me and say, you know, like, “I have been queer my whole life but never had the ability to come out until recently.

And this film makes me yearn for what could have been.” Or people who are also Mexican-Americans who are like, “Yes, this is what it's like to grow up here and what it's like to be a border kid” and something that I just never thought would happen, but it does happen.

And I think, yeah, I want more people to feel seen.
